In support of the new high school academies, WEP funded a week of professional development in August 2008 for more than 150 teachers. President Susan Levin presented a check for $50,000 to high school principals Joe Davis, Glenn Reaves, and Steve Ellis to assist the school system with “Professional Learning Communities” training.
WEP sponsors summer tours to businesses, giving teachers the opportunity to speak with employers and learn about local job opportunities. Teachers get a first-hand chance to see products made and services provided by a variety of Wilson County businesses. Summer 2009 tours were hosted by Bridgestone, Stephenson Millwork Company, Smithfield Packing Company, and Purdue Pharmaceuticals.
Each year WEP hosts a Community Fair to welcome new teachers to the school system. Educators enjoy door prizes, refreshments, networking and learning about educational resources available from area nonprofit agencies and community organizations.
WEP partners with the school system to host a group of North Carolina Teaching Fellows each spring. WEP provides lunch for the student Fellows and welcomes them to the community, in hopes of recruiting some of these students as future teachers in our schools.
